Build options before you need them

If you came here from LinkedIn or X

Your job was never your security. Your options are.

A layoff taught me the difference the hard way. This page shows how to build options before you need them: proof of your value, relationships that open doors, and an offer someone other than your employer will pay for.

Why this exists

Four people. Different careers. The same weak spot.

I was laid off and out of work for more than half a year. My savings ran out. I took a role that paid well below what I had earned before, and I am still rebuilding.

I wasn't the only one. Three friends, all experienced, went through their own versions:

  • Back in, then out againNearly a year out of work. Got back into tech. That job ended too.
  • Always a finalistDeep technical experience at a major company. Reached final rounds again and again for a year. No offer.
  • Big company, short stayHired by a multibillion-dollar company. Laid off within six months.
  • MeLaid off. Savings gone. Back at work for less, and still digging out.

None of us lacked experience. What we lacked was something to fall back on: income that came from one place, and nothing built behind it.

A new job doesn't fix that. It can rebuild the same exposure. The fix is having options before you need them.

What doesn't build options

Most people respond to job insecurity in one of three ways. None of them builds options.

Apply harder

More applications into the same funnel. Even experienced people get stuck as finalists, because a résumé alone doesn't make your value easy to verify.

Wait for the market

Waiting leaves your next opportunity up to people you have never met. The relationships and proof you skip building now are what you will need later.

Learning feels like progress. But reading doesn't create proof, contacts or demand. Only a finished action does.

The mechanism

The Optionality Stack: four layers that turn experience into options.

Security comes from layers you control, and each one takes a small action. Fill all four and losing one job or one client stops being a crisis.

Layer 1

A skill in demand

Something people outside your current company would pay for, not just your job title.

This week: Name 1 skill you have that's in demand outside your current employer.
Layer 2

Proof

Results a stranger can verify in two minutes, not "responsible for…" bullet points.

This week: Write one short case study: the problem, what you did, the measurable result.
Layer 3

Relationships

People who would think of you when an opportunity comes up, before it's ever posted.

This week: List 3 people to reconnect with, and message one of them.
Layer 4

An offer to test

A clear promise to one kind of buyer, about one problem you have already solved.

This week: Choose 1 buyer, 1 recurring problem and 1 outcome you can deliver.

Choose your path

Which one sounds like you right now?

Each path is a complete system: the guide that explains it, plus the worksheets, scripts and trackers to actually do it.

Career Defense

“I want options if this job disappears.”

You're employed, or trying to be, and you're done being blindsided. Build proof of your results, keep warm relationships, and make your skills portable so the next layoff, reorg or stalled search doesn't decide your future for you.

Start with the Career Defense System. Add Ghost-Proof if you're actively searching, or the Offer System when an offer is close.

Fractional Leadership

“My experience should pay outside one employer.”

A title is only one way to package what you know. Choose one buyer and one problem you've already solved, and turn that into a part-time executive offer, so your income doesn't depend on one company's decision.

Start with the Playbook. Take the Complete System if you want the operating templates and pricing models too. Add Depth Score to turn LinkedIn into inbound conversations.

Client Systems

“I want the next client to come from a system, not luck.”

You already work for yourself, but income still swings between feast and famine, or depends on one anchor client. Build an audience you own, a pipeline that keeps running while you deliver, and an intake process that turns inquiries into signed clients.

Start with the One-Form bundle if you're solo. Add Algorithm-Proof to own your audience, and Zero-Touch to automate onboarding.

Most guides get read once and change nothing. These come with the tools to act on them.

Guide + tools

Every system pairs the strategy with worksheets, scripts or trackers, so each chapter ends in a finished action.

Straight answers

Will this get me a job or a client?

No guide can promise that, and you should be wary of any that do. What these give you is the proof, the relationships and the offer that make you easier to hire or buy from, plus the step-by-step tools to build them.

Is this a course?

No. These are PDF guides with fillable worksheets, word-for-word scripts and spreadsheets. No videos, no logins, no subscription. You download them and start.

I'm not an executive. Is this still for me?

Career Defense, the Client Intake bundle and the Algorithm-Proof System work at any level. The Fractional and Ghost-Proof systems are written for experienced managers, directors and executives.

Which one should I start with?

Take the 60-second check above. If you're employed and worried, start with Career Defense ($24). If you want to sell your expertise, start with the Fractional Leadership Playbook ($67). If you already work for yourself, start with the Client Intake bundle ($37).
